Life can be hectic. I get it. Sometimes you just don’t have time to cook a meal from scratch. You need a little bit of convenience and someone else to deliver some food love to your door. Well, this week one of our USA based dietitian team, Vanessa Cobarrubia got some amazing low FODMAP meals delivered thanks to Epicured.
She’s here to tell us about her experience.
Hi Vanessa, I know you’ve been in the FODMAP space for a while now, what first captured your attention about the Epicured meal delivery service?
I’m always on the hunt for new low FODMAP solutions for my IBS patients. Just like me they are time poor and need easy meals to help them get their symptoms under control fast.
However, the stress of navigating the supermarket, prepping food and then cooking when starting the low FODMAP diet can get a bit much. Epicured offers a solution where all they have to do is choose what they want to eat.
In a nutshell, Epicured is a subscription meal service that delivers gut friendly low FODMAP and gluten-free meals to the North Eastern part of the United States – I’ve also heard that they will be expanding nationwide this fall. ALL of their meals are low FODMAP which I LOVE and everything is reviewed by Epicured’s in-house dietitian, Shannon Kearney.
It’s also pretty cool knowing that the food is prepared by Michelin-star chef, Dani Chavez-Bello, with natural and heathy ingredients, just looking at the website makes my mouth water.
Fun fact for you – not only are Epicured meals suitable for people with IBS but they are also appropriate for those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, plus there are vegan and dairy free options to choose from.
It is pretty simple to order, all I had to do was select my food choices for the week from the seasonal menu items and schedule a delivery. Everything was delivered fresh, so I just had to heat and eat, no cooking was required.
That sounds amazing. I’ve just been looking at their menu and there are so many options…What Epicured meals did you order?
There were so many to choose from that I was scared I was going to miss something good. In my first order I grab these dishes:
- Turkey Meatballs with Basil Pomodoro Sauce
- Warm Autumn Salad
- Coconut Shrimp Laska
- Pad Thai with Shrimp
- Hawker Lettuce Wraps with Chicken
- Quinoa Tabbolueh
- Strawberry-Rose Chia Seed Pudding
- Almond & Cranberry Energy Bites
- Peanut Butter & Chocolate Energy Bite
- Turmeric Latte

I love the variety you chose and I know how much effort it would take to make those dishes from scratch. How did you feel when the Epicured products turned up on your doorstep?
Haha, well you should have seen the relief and excitement on my face when the Epicured box arrived! It was kind of like Christmas for my stomach all wrapped up in a large eco friendly, recyclable box. I knew my food for the week was sorted.
The next step was the unwrapping of the dishes. The cardboard box is really well insulated and lined with ice packs which kept my meals cold for delivery. These ice packs can easily be repurposed, ideal to keep your summer time cooler nice and cold.
All my meals came in prepackaged Polypropylene (PP) trays with a clear lid which are recyclable, reusable, and dishwasher safe. I am saving these trays for future meal prep days.
You sound so onto it Vanessa! Saving the meal trays is a great move. So once you had unwrapped your meals, what did you decide to eat first?
I tried the Turkey Meatballs with Basil Pomodoro first, since it was pasta night at our house. These meatballs are rather generous in size and paired well with the marinara sauce. I could have split this meal into two if I served them with gluten-free, low FODMAP pasta. The turkey meatballs were moist and had a mild Italian flavour. The best part was this meal only took five minutes to warm up in a pan.
What was the rest of your Epicured experience like?
The whole experience was an adventure for my taste buds!
The Warm Autumn Salad was perfect for a work day lunch. My colleagues were all very impressed with this dish and commented on how beautiful it looked. The directions recommended keeping it at room temperature for approximately an hour to “warm”. This was my favourite meal, all of the ingredients worked so well together. Delicate squash – my favourite winter squash, two brussel sprouts, moderate portions of broccoli, quinoa, and kale were a perfect combination. Craisins added a little sweetness and the mint dressing added a unique twist to create a ‘craveable’ salad. This salad punched a pretty hefty fiber punch keeping me full for hours.
The Coconut Shrimp Laksa was amazing! I enjoy a good curry and this one didn’t miss a beat. The yellow coconut curry sauce was so flavorful, it mingled perfectly with the generous portion of shrimp, vegetables and basmati rice.
The Pad Thai with Shrimp was light, satisfying, and perfectly seasoned. Both this dish and the Coconut Shrimp Laska made me feel like I was eating at an upscale Thai restaurant.
Hawker Lettuce Wraps with Chicken looked pretty simple, yet they where surprisingly flavorful. The ground chicken had a yummy Thai profile that felt complete with the lime and crushed nuts wrapped in Bibb lettuce. Sometimes simple is just what you need.
Quinoa Tabboluleh was zesty and packed with lemon, mint, and parsley. My thoughts on this is that it makes a solid side dish.
Peanut Butter and Chocolate Energy Bites and the Almond and Cranberry Energy Bites are perfect for a midday hunger or a pre-workout snacks. These kept well for several days stayed moist despite being gluten free. These were far superior than any store-bought energy bar. My children equally loved these and kept sneaking them from the refrigerator!
Strawberry- Rose Chia Seed Pudding can be an easy, healthy breakfast or snack option. The fresh strawberries and coconut milk made for a tasty combination without being too sweet. This healthy fat and fiber combination kept me full for several hours, always a bonus on busy work days.
Turmeric Latte was delightful, it was slightly sweetened and has a spicy hint of cinnamon. I loved it both hot or cold which makes it an ideal take to work option.

Vanessa it sounds like the food got the tick of approval from both you and your family. So was there anything that didn’t quite work for you?
Not really, all of the meals tasted great and were super easy to assemble or heat up, the majority are ready to eat. My work week can get a little hectic with my full time job, my kids’s soccer practices, and household chores, it was luxurious to not have to worry about my meals for a few days. Everyday I looked forward to these beautiful and mouth watering dishes.
They only personal con is the large amount of packaging, while this is all recyclable it might be overwhelming for some. There really is no other way around this from a production side since the food needs to be shipped cold. All the meal services I have tried over the years are shipped in the same manner.
I also want to point out that Epicured is not inexpensive, however it is comparable to many restaurant and take out prepared meals. Meals range from $7.99-22.99, soups $7.99-10.99, and snacks and sides from $3.99-8.99. Many certified low FODMAP foods are higher in cost than traditional groceries so many report spending extra money if they incorporate more of these specialty foods.
The bottom line is that special diets often result in higher food costs, especially when purchasing convenient, ready to eat foods versus cooking the majority of your meals at home. When factoring in the cost consider the time saved by not having to grocery shop, cook, and learn the ins and outs of low FODMAP diet.
Who do you think Epicured is good for?
Epicured is an ideal meal service for anyone who is following a low FODMAP diet and looking for easy, convenient, delicious, gut friendly, healthy meals. As a dietitian I feel confident recommending this Epicured to my IBS patients especially as they navigate the low FODMAP diet.
Final question…Would you order more Epicured products again?
For sure, without question. What I like best about Epicured is that you can select your meals and snacks on a weekly basis and there is no continued commitment. I think Epicured would be great when you want to mix and match some convenient meals with your cook at home low FODMAP meals to keep the total cost down.
I also can’t wait to see Epicured expand from delivering throughout the North East from Boston to Washington D.C. to the greater USA. It is a brilliant idea and I so appreciate that this amazing service is available for all of us following a FODMAP diet.
