Many people wonder if they need to stay on the low FODMAP diet for the rest of their lives. The short answer is no.
The low FODMAP diet is not a forever diet. Instead, it has three phases and is designed to be a temporary tool to help identify the food triggers that set off your gut symptoms. The goal is to personalise your diet so you can enjoy the widest variety of foods that you tolerate well, rather than following a lifelong restrictive diet.
Why isn’t the first phase meant to be permanent?
The first phase of the low FODMAP diet reduces foods that contain fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs). While this can help improve gut symptoms, it also limits many nutritious foods that support a healthy and diverse gut microbiome. It can also make cooking and eating out challenging.
That’s why the first phase is usually followed for around 2–6 weeks before moving on to the next step.
What happens after the first phase?
Once you’ve seen if the low FODMAP diet helps reduce your symptoms (aiming for a 50% improvement), it’s time to start the FODMAP Reintroduction Phase.
The goal of the FODMAP reintroductions is to discover:
- Which FODMAP group(s) is your main trigger.
- How much of each FODMAP group you tolerate.
- Which foods you can comfortably enjoy again.
Most people find they can reintroduce multiple high FODMAP groups back into their diet. This gives them more flexibility and variety in their daily meals and makes cooking and eating out easier.
What does long-term FODMAP look like?
The final phase is called the Adapted or Personalised FODMAP Diet.
Instead of avoiding all high FODMAP foods, you’ll eat the widest variety of foods that you tolerate well while limiting only your personal trigger foods or serving sizes.
This creates a diet that is:
- More varied.
- Easier to follow.
- Better for your gut microbiome.
- More enjoyable in the long term.
